Whoa! What’s this? The Pulse Of Radio reporting Mastodon may be releasing a new full-length album this fall called Cold Dark Place, according to multiple sources. Guitarist/singer Brent Hinds first mentioned the LP as a solo album, then later suggested it would be combined with the band’s current record Emperor Of Sand as a double album.
Emperor Of Sand ended up coming out as a single effort, and now Cold Dark Place will surface as a new standalone LP from the group. Hinds told Guitar World that he wrote the set himself and recorded it with Mastodon drummer Brann Dailor and bassist Troy Sanders prior to recording Emperor Of Sand.
He added, “It has to do with a nasty breakup that I went through. I wrote some pretty dark, beautiful, spooky, funky, ethereal, melancholy music, which also sounds like the Bee Gees a little bit (laughs).”
Troy Sanders told us Mastodon always writes from personal experience: “Mastodon tends to draw from our experiences that we’re currently living. That’s one of the beautiful things I love about my bandmates. We’re not gonna candy-coat stuff and sing and act happy when there’s some serious issues going on, and we reflect what we’re living. We basically take that light or that darkness and we just reflect it outward, and we’re very fortunate to channel all of those emotions through this art that we call Mastodon.”
Hinds himself teased the new release online today by posting the cover art, although a Sep 22nd release date posted by Amazon was later pulled. Emperor Of Sand came out in April and debuted at Number Seven on the Billboard 200 album chart. The disc contained the Top Five rock radio single “Show Yourself.” “Steambreather” is the current Mastodon single on hardDriveRadio. Mastodon kick off a fall North American headlining tour in Denver on Sep 23rd.
The Pulse Of Radio also says Metallica, and especially frontman James Hetfield, rarely wade into the rocky waters of political commentary. But Hetfield did so in subtle fashion during the final show of the band’s summer North American tour on Wednesday night (Aug 16th).
Speaking to the stadium-sized crowd in Edmonton, AB Canada, Hetfield indirectly addressed current events, including the tragic occurrences in Charlottesville, VA last weekend, by saying, “Before we go any further, we’ve gotta make something very clear. Metallica doesn’t give a s**t, all right? We don’t give a s**t about the differences, okay? We care about the similarities. So the fact that you’re here — we don’t care who you voted for, what you do or don’t eat, we don’t care what color your skin is, what you do for a job. We don’t care what you’ve done in the past. What we do care about is the fact that we’re all together here, celebrating life with music. So for me, you are Metallica family. All are welcome. Are you with us?”
Metallica livestreamed the concert for its North American fans, calling the just-completed tour “another memorable and special summer run for us seeing so many new faces along with lots of old friends as you welcomed us back for our first tour of North America in over eight years.”
Metallica has been on the road in support of its 10th studio album, Hardwired…To Self-Destruct. The band will next begin a European tour on Sep 2nd in Copenhagen, DK.
Wow. This is heavy. The late Linkin Park singer Chester Bennington‘s widow Talinda has posted music online from Chester’s 21-year-old son, Jaime, tweeting, “Our son Jaime is as talented as his father.” Talinda linked to Jaime’s new four-song EP, titled Reveries 4, which features piano-based compositions.
Jaime is Chester’s eldest child and his mother is Elka Brand. He said online, “To be honest, I ran out of ideas and I most definitely ran out of motivation. But I’m back and I have come bearing gifts! Below are the next installments of my Reveries compositions. This time around I have gone the whole nine yards to construct a collection of pieces, rather than one big one (although there is a lengthy piece at the end).”
Jaime added his inspiration behind the pieces was noted 20th Century Russian composer Dimitri Shostakovich, saying he studied “every symphony, brooding string quartet and whimsical piano solo” by the composer over the past six months.
Chester also adopted Brand’s other son, Isaiah, in 2006. The singer’s other four children include a 15-year-old son named Draven by his first wife Samantha and three young children — twin girls and a boy — with Talinda. Chester was found dead in his Los Angeles-area home on Jul 20th with the cause of death ruled as suicide by hanging. He was buried in a private service on Jul 29th.
Blabbermouth is reporting Rob Zombie has joined forces with HDNet Movies to host the network’s upcoming holiday movie event, “Rob Zombie’s 13 Nights Of Halloween,” which will run from Oct 19th through Halloween night, Oct 31st. On each of the 13 nights, Zombie will introduce and share his thoughts on the horror films airing during the event.
Films set to air during the series include classics like 1958’s The Blob and 1972’s The Last House On The Left, alongside newer genre entries such as 2012’s The Devil Inside and 2009’s Case 39. The full schedule is yet to be unveiled.
Although Zombie has written and directed six live-action horror movies to date, he told us a while back the kind of horror film he’d still like to make: “It would be so cool to do, like, The Return Of Frankenstein, but you do it like Frankenstein looked in all the original Universal films. That would be so cool to go back and make a totally classic horror movie. Don’t jazz it all up like Van Helsing, but make something really classic. I think people would go for it.“
Among Zombie’s movies are House Of 1000 Corpses, The Devil’s Rejects, a remake of Halloween, The Lords Of Salem and last year’s 31. Zombie recently disclosed that he has started working on the follow-up to last year’s studio album The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satanic Orgy Celebration Dispenser. P.S. I love the end of The Blob trailer: “Starring Steve McQueen and a cast of exciting young people!” What???? LOL
Here is a new trailer for Black Sabbath‘s “The End Of The End” concert film. Blabbermouth is reporting the film chronicles the final tour from the band that spawned the metal genre. On Feb 04, 2017, Sabbath stormed the stage in their hometown of Birmingham, to play the 81st and final triumphant gig of “The End” tour. This monumental show brought down the curtain on a career that spanned almost half a century. The sold-out performance marked the culmination of a global tour that saw the band play to over one and a half million fans. With their inception in 1968, Black Sabbath pioneered a sound that would form the basis of heavy metal, and to this day continues to influence bands the world over.
The film brings fans the up close and personal story of the final, emotionally charged concert, as the band perform hits, including “Iron Man”, “Paranoid”, “War Pigs” and many more. Join Sabbath in the studio, as they deliver unique and exclusive performances of some of their favorite songs not played on the tour, and catch an intimate glimpse into the band’s world; the music, relationships and banter, alongside personal anecdotes.
The band said: “To bring it all back home after all these years was pretty special. It was so hard to say goodbye to the fans, who’ve been incredibly loyal to us through the years. We never dreamed in the early days that we’d be here 49 years later doing our last show on our home turf.”
“The End Of The End” offers you the chance to witness for yourself Black Sabbath’s incredible swansong. As Ozzy Osbourne says: “What a journey we’ve all had. It’s fucking amazing.” This is the final word from the greatest heavy metal band of all time. Read more here.
And I am leaving the last word today to these guys. Blabbermouth reposted an interview Tom Morello and Chuck D of Prophets Of Rage did with UPROXX about last Saturday’s events in Charlottesville, VA, where one woman was killed, two Virginia state troopers died, and nineteen others were injured during a white nationalists’ rally and a gathering of counter protesters.
President Donald Trump placed blame for the violence on “both sides,” the white supremacists and the counter-protesters, of the conflict, even after one alleged white nationalist was charged with murder after ramming his car into a crowd of protesters, killing 32-year-old Heather Heyer.
“We should be totally pissed off by what happened in Charlottesville and what our president is saying,” Morello told Uproxx. “I mean, he is clearly on record who he’s representing.”
Chuck D added: “[Trump] knows damn well that there’s a contingent out there that he inspired and made rise with all the rhetoric he was spinning in [his] campaign.”
Prophets Of Rage’s self-titled debut album will be released on Sep15 via Fantasy Records. The disc was recorded with legendary producer Brendan O’Brien who has done notable work with Rage Against The Machine and Audioslave, to name just a few.
Celebrating life this weekend: Today: Frances Bean Cobain is 25. Everlast is 48. Saturday: President Bill Clinton is 71. Sunday: Robert Plant is 69 and Fred Durst will be 47. Have a great weekend and see ya Monday!
