OK, so yesterday, our friends in Tool played an April Fool’s joke, but all you had to do is listen to the first couple of notes to know it was all in silliness. Listen to the “leaked Tool music” here. The band pranked its long-suffering followers with a Facebook post blasting the supposed leak of a song from its upcoming new album. Calling the leak “unsettling on many levels,” the group even accused another band of grabbing the stolen song and posting it as their own work. The Facebook post read in part, “First off, it truly sucks to have your unfinished music available on the interweb without your consent. And second, to have it immediately picked up by someone and released as their own work is infuriating.” The post asked fans to avoid listening to the leaked music at all, but added, “If you absolutely must, then listen to both clips. These are practically identical. It’s a clear cut case of copyright infringement and plagiarism.” The post then links to a pair of YouTube pages that are supposed to feature both the leaked Tool clip and the “plagiarized” version — but both instead play a song called “El Sondito,”a massive 2009 hit for the Mexican group Hechizeros Band. Some fans did not apparently see the humor in the post — after all they’ve been waiting for a new Tool album for nine years. But this isn’t the first time that Tool has punked its fans on April 1st, as singer Maynard James Keenan told us a while back: “There’s a lot of people online that apparently can’t read very well. I put an April Fool’s notice up there for the album release, and it was 2011, I said, ‘New Tool album, such-and-such a date, 2009, and everybody ran around like, ‘Oh, really, the new Tool –?’ God, you guys are dumb. I swear to God. You’ve got to read.” Guitarist Adam Jones revealed last month that Tool had finally settled a multi-level lawsuit that had dragged on for eight years and set back its recording and touring plans. Jones also revealed that an undisclosed member of the band faced a “really scary do-or-die, serious illness” not long ago. The band is now working at a faster pace on music for its first new studio set since 2006’s 10,000 Days…. Silver screens and rock stars. Two noted rock icons, Rob Zombie and Clown from Slipknot are in the process of directing new films to be released in the next 12 months. First up, Rob Zombie has announced his crowd-funded new horror film, 31, has been picked up for North American distribution by independent company Alchemy. No release date has been established yet for the film, which is currently nearing the end of production. The film’s cast includes Sheri Moon Zombie, Richard Brake, Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, Daniel Roebuck, Lew Temple, Meg Foster and Malcolm McDowell. 31 follows five carnival workers who are kidnapped the night before Halloween and held hostage in a large secret compound known as Murder World. Once there, they have 12 hours to survive a terrifying game called “31,” in which murderous maniacs dressed as clowns and called “The Heads” hunt them down and kill them.” Alchemy CEO Bill Lee said, “Rob Zombie is a true artist and master filmmaker at the height of his game. With 31 he’s creating yet another terrifyingly immersive and twisted world that will delight audiences.” Zombie said he was “thrilled to work with a company sharing the same vision for my film 31 as I have. Alchemy has committed to bringing the most intense experience possible to the screen.” Zombie launched a successful crowdfunding campaign online to raise the money for the film’s budget. His previous film was 2012’s The Lords Of Salem. Meanwhile, the directorial debut from Slipknot percussionist Shawn “Clown” Crahan is filling out its cast. Titled Officer Downe, the independent production is an adaptation of the graphic novel of the same name, in which a police officer keeps dying in the line of duty and is brought back to life by his superiors to continue his duties. With Sons Of Anarchy star Kim Coates already confirmed for the title role, the movie has now added Tyler Ross from Zombieland, Lauren Velez from Dexter, Reno Wilson of Mike And Mollyand Bruno Gunn from The Hunger Games: Catching Fire to its cast. Officer Downe is set to be released in 2016. Crahan, who has directed many of Slipknot’s music videos and concert films, said about the project, “I honestly believe that we are gonna create the next ‘Clockwork Orange’ and I’m gonna die trying because that’s my life.” Crahan’s bandmate in Slipknot, singer Corey Taylor, recently made his acting debut in the movie Fear Clinic.
