What a weekend! Started with Friday night’s drive upstate to the mountains. Just driving along, beautiful late afternoon fall day, and we see a deer running across the road ahead of us, happily prancing along in the brush, when BLAM, a stag came out of nowhere on our left, striking the front end of our car, whiplashing it’s head and landing on the side of the road. We didn’t even have a chance to react, it happened so fast! I was in shock! Luckily, we were fine; sadly, the deer, not so much. (We were really lucky he didn’t roll onto the hood and bust the windshield or explode the airbags!) But the good news is my new insurance company was AMAZING! I mean, hassle-free trip to body shop and car rental place. So far, so good. Hopefully car will be back as good as new soon!…So happy to hear my pal (who loves hunting deer) Aaron Lewis (Staind) is also ok after his close call. He was in an airplane mishap on Saturday. Luckily, they weren’t in the air, rather he was in a private plane headed to a gig after filming his hunting show, now called On The Road, on the Sportsman Channel. He was leaving Warton, TX after some teal duck shooting on his way to perform his solo country material in nearby Tulsa, OK. Somehow, the plane’s wheels got stuck in the mud along the runway. He has been touring with country star Brandon Gilbert. Obviously, he missed the Tulsa show. Guess Brandon played an extra long set! Glad to hear Aaron was A.O.K…..Meanwhile, Metal Hammer reports Korn will be playing their debut self-titled album it it’s entirety when they kick off theit tour with Slipknot next month. (Not sure if this holds true for the show next weekend in Louisville.) Interesting, because this is the album that contains the tune “Daddy,” which JD has said he would never perform live, but if I don’t know if that’s true. I swear I was at a show where he performed it, and I want to say during his solo run….Anyhow, I understand the writing continues in that camp: JD, Head and Munky are always writing and Munky said he and Head were aiming to “expand on the heavy riffs and get a bit dirtier” on the next, Korn’s 12th album. Yippee! Anyhow, I for one, can’t wait for new OR old Korn material!…Linkin Park will play a rare small venue show on Oct 24th when the band takes over the Wiltern Theater in Los Angeles as part of the celebration of Guitar Center’s 50th anniversary. Fans who can’t get in will be able to watch the show on an episode of Guitar Center Sessions that will air exclusively on DirecTV’s Audience Network on Dec 07 at 9:00 p.m….Now, this is a labor of love! Pulse of Radio reports a long-in-the-works documentary on the late jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius that has been produced by Metallica bassist Robert Trujillo will finally have its world premiere on Oct 06 at the Mill Valley Film Festival, where all four members of Metallica will be honored as artists in residence. Trujillo told USA Today he was not sure how to complete the documentary until he ran into famed singer/songwriter Joni Mitchell, who worked with Pastorius on 1980’s Shadows And Light. Trujillo recalled, “We got to talking about music, and eventually she agreed to appear in the film. That changed everything.” Trujillo funded the film himself. His only other previous producing credit was on last year’s Metallica concert movie, Metallica Through The Never, on which all four members were credited as producers. Following the screening on the 6th will be a benefit concert for the California Film Institute, which will feature performances from Trujillo, Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett, Jane’s Addiction drummer Stephen Perkins, along with Jaco’s daughter Mary and nephew David. Trujillo hopes to take Jaco to other festivals early next year, including South By Southwest and the Berlin Film Festival, and is currently in talks with a few distributors for a spring 2015 theatrical release. Jaco is best know for his works in the late 60’s and early 70’s in the jazz rock fusion band Weather Report. He has been the influence of countless bassists, and most recently, I was talking to Crosses Chuck Doom about the impact Pastorius had on him as well. I’ll be looking for that documentary! …Speaking of documentaries, “Life In The V: The Story of V66” is one made by director Eric Green and producer Matthew Nerney, who were fans of this music video channel V-66 (WVJV-TV) I worked for in the Boston area from 1985-1987. Short lived, but we were certainly important to the Boston music scene in those days and once we went off the air, the community felt a gapping hole. So enter Eric and Matt and they rounded up the staff (including yours truly) and some local Boston musicians who spoke so endearingly about what the station meant to them. So I was invited to the Independent Television and Film festival in Dover, VT this Saturday, so if you are in the area, be sure to come by. The screening is Saturday at Noon at the Dover Theater, 4 Mountain Park Plaza, Rt 100, West Dover, VT….If you are planning to hit the Louder Than Life Festival in Louisville next weekend (Oct 04-05), I’ve posted the line-up and set times on the Road Rage page. Search Louder Than Life….Finally today, Blabbermouth reports The Pretty Reckless singer Taylor Momsen has confirmed the band is working on an acoustic album, to be released in the coming months. “We just recorded an acoustic version of a medley,” Momsen told LA Rock of the Jacksonville, North Carolina radio station Rock 105.5 . “It’s how we originally wrote the songs, so it’s kind of an inside take, or look, into how [the sophomore album] ‘Going To Hell‘ actually started. ‘Cause everything started acoustically.” She added: “If you can’t play it all the way through, front to back, on an acoustic guitar, then it’s not a good enough song to bring in the band.” Momsen was also asked if the rumors are true she is writing a book. “I’m always writing,” she replied. “I’m writing a book, I’m writing a screenplay, I’m writing… I’ve already written half the next record. Writing inspires writing, art inspires art, so it’s kind of a never-ending process, and you’re just kind of trying to always be in the creative mindset.”…Happy 56th today to Joan Jett! And Happy Belated to Rick DeJesus of Adelitas Way! He turned 31 on Saturday!
