Every year this time, our friends down at 93.3 WMMR in Philadelphia throw their big ‘MMR*B*Q festival and this year, something special happened! Blabbermouth reports original Kiss drummer Peter Criss joined Rob Zombie on stage Saturday night, (May 10) at Susquehanna Bank Center in Camden, NJ to perform a cover of the Kiss classic “God Of Thunder”. Zombie introduced Criss by telling the audience: “Ladies and gentlemen, if you are anything like me, you were very disappointed a little while ago, because I tuned into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, and I did not get to see my favorite drummer get behind the motherfucking drums. So tonight, it is our great honor to bring to you the one and only Catman, Mr. Peter Criss.” After exchanging a hug with Criss, Zombie joked, “This might be a little awkward. I’m gonna sing [the Kiss ballad] ‘Beth’ for everybody.” Rob and his band kicked into “God Of Thunder”, with Criss and Zombie drummer Ginger Fish — who donned a Catman mask — both playing drums on the song. Zombie told our The Pulse Of Radio a while back that KISS was one of his biggest influences when he was young. “There was three things in the ’70s when I was a little kid that were incredibly influential to me,” he said. “You know, Alice Cooper, Elton John and Kiss. As a kid, I was just crazy about all three of those.” Back in May 2006, Rob Zombie joined original Kiss guitarist Ace Frehley and ex-Guns N’ Roses axeman Gilby Clarke plus an all-star band consisting of Slash, Tommy Lee on drums and Scott Ian (bass; Anthrax) to perform “God Of Thunder” as a tribute to Kiss at the “VH1 Rock Honors” event…..Another story I saw on Blabbermouth this morning, Lars Ulrich told BBC 1 Radio in England that Metallica is slowly but surely making moves to start making their next album. They haven’t released one since 2008! That is the longest stretch between albums for those guys! (What are they getting like TOOL?) Anyhow, the next step is to choose a producer, and they’ve narrowed it down to a couple of names, neither of which Lars said will be a big surprise to anyone. I, for one, hope they go with someone new. Or even go back to working with Bob Rock. Personally speaking, I have not been the biggest fan of their work with Rick Rubin. It’s my feeling if a band like Metallica decides they NEED a producer, they should have someone who is in there with them. Directing, guiding, offering suggestions. Not a “drive by” dude who collects a gigantic paycheck for less than 24 hours of work. (I’m guessing at the hours, they could be less.) But again, it’s my (me, Roxy’s) personal opinion. I’d like to see someone like Nick Raskulinecz in there, or Joe Barresi. Or even David Bendeth, someone who will work really hard and give the band their best work. Hit Blabbermouth today to read the entire story and even the man who mastered the last album will add his two cents…..Meanwhile, I am violating my own rule about when we are announcing the tour, but hey, it’s OUR TOUR! The 2014 hardDrive Live Tour with headliners Black Stone Cherry with We As Human and KYNG will kick off in Johnson City, TN on July 11th! We are sooo stoked! Black Stone just made news with their new album, Magic Mountain, debuting in the top 5 on the UK chart. Just like Alter Bridge, Black Stone Cherry have a substantial following over there and these guys are on the verge of making it even bigger over here. We are delighted to have them, and the bands who are supporting, to say the least! One thing we like to do is mix up the styles of today’s rock we present with the tour, and this year, our 6th, is no different! See the hardDrive Live Tour site for all the dates which will be posted at Noon eastern. Tix on sale for these dates on Friday. Many thanks to Vin and InDeGoot Mgt and to our own Julian and Jamie for making the site look AWESOME!…..Saw this today on Metal Hammer: Korn’s Jonathan Davis says the metal scene in the 1990s was a much more brotherly place than it is now. The Korn frontman says he is put off by the snobbery in today’s scene and that he misses the days when his band, Limp Bizkit and other nu-metal pioneers would help each other out. He tells Metal Trails: “Back in the 90s, the band camaraderie was all different. We were all brothers, pushing each other on. Stuff we did with Bizkit or Staind, those bands, it was a brotherhood and we helped these bands along. It seems like it’s kind of got lost these days.” Davis adds that the so-called ‘true metal’ movement is the result of youngsters trying to out-do each other. He says: “You’re dealing with kids. Kids are kids and there’s always gonna be that friction. I just love all music and I’m not gonna hate on it. I don’t care who came first or what kind of metal is better than what kind of metal. We just get on with all the bands.” Davis is also asked to respond to comments from Status Quo’s Francis Rossi, who is reported to have been disparaging about electronic music. He says: “I’m not trying to talk down about the guy but I think he should pick up a laptop and try to write an electronic song. It takes so much talent and so much time to really do that stuff right. I’m glad electronic music came into the metal scene. It needed to be updated and I’m all for it.” In the rest of the video interview, Davis discusses his love for European fans and his work on the Queen Of The Damned soundtrack. Ya know, there are just too many haters out there. I for one am getting tired of it. Seriously……You’ve got to see the size of the crowd from Saturday’s Rise Above Festival in Bangor, ME! Congrats to Shaun Morgan of Seether and his staff for putting on an amazing line up (which included Black Stone Cherry, Avenged Sevenfold, Motorhead, KYNG, Hellyeah, Devour the Day and of course, Seether!) Check out the photo on Avenged’s Facebook here. Looking forward to seeing all of those bands this weekend at Rock on the Range!…..Let’s get a good laugh today watching this video from comedian Brandon Muller. He sends up Disturbed‘s lead singer in a really hysterical way. And don’t worry, David Draiman thinks it’s hilarious too! Check it out here.….Lots of birthdays being celebrated today! Yankee legend Yogi Berra turns 89! Kiss drummer Eric Singer is 56. The Cult’s Billy Duffy is 53, Brett Gurwitz of Bad Religion and Epitaph Records is 52 and skateboarder Tony Hawk is 46.
During a brand new interview with BBC Radio 1‘s Zane Lowe, METALLICA drummer Lars Ulrich was asked about the progress of the songwriting sessions for the band’s long-awaited follow-up to 2008’s “Death Magnetic”.
“We’re just doing our best,” Ulrich replied (hear audio below). “I mean, what am I gonna say?! We’re in there writing when we’re not haning out or playing ‘By Request’ shows in Latin America or around Europe. Fear not, it does move forward. Did I say Antarctica earlier… Well, I meant the glacial part. It moves like a glacier, but it does move, I can attest to that, because I find myself in there occasionally.”
Pressed about the identity of the producer who will helm METALLICA‘s next studio album, Ulrich replied: “I can’t tell you that yet. We had a little powwow a couple of weeks ago. Our managers came out to try and ask us that very question — who’s producing our record? — and they walked away empty-handed. But it’s down to one or two names, both of them who are certainly not gonna surprise anybody. We’ve just gotta kind of circle the wagons and figure it out.”
