Woo whee! Foo Fighters….last night! OMG!!! What can I say. We were invited to a fabulous dinner party thrown by HBO to celebrate the Dave Grohl-directed Sonic Highways. Ran into some wonderful folks I haven’t seen in a while including the band’s manager and the director of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (man, they’ve GOT to get Cheap Trick in next year!) Only Nate Mendel from the band was in attendance from the band that I could see, and Paul Shaffer from Letterman‘s band. I tried to collect all 8 orange cocktail napkins. Each one had the HBO logo, with Sonic Highways and the name of one of the eight cities. I collected them all but Los Angeles! Rats! Anyhow, after our meal, we walked up the street to the famous Ed Sullivan Theater and took our seats in the balcony. God, if that theater could talk! All the amazing celebrities and musicians (hello, The Beatles performed there) who graced this stage! So after about a 30 minute wait, the first episode of Sonic Highways rolled. It was so fricking amazing. It was the Chicago recording session. Buddy Guy, Bonnie Raitt, Steve Albini (what a character), the Chicago music history from blues to punk, Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick. And we got to hear the new single “Something From Nothing,” which was a sentence said by Buddy Guy to Dave which ended up being in the lyrics of the song. As a kid, Buddy (one of the remaining original Chicago blues guitarists) would make instruments from string and a button. Attach a wire to a wall and play it. Musicians then would make music with whatever they could get their hands on. Broom sticks, pots and pans, spoons! I said to Foos manager, I am so happy I got to see it in a room with other people, because I would’ve really disturbed my neighbors watching it in my apartment hootin’ & hollerin’! LOL But I recommend you make a point to view it yourself, or definitely set your DVRs! So once the last credit rolled, one of the HBO execs came out to introduce Dave and then Dave explained how it all happened. He had this idea, called Rob Burnett, Letterman’s producer and the principal of Worldwide Pants, and Dave told Grohl, do it! Then the band entered the stage and played many of the big Foos’ hits: “All My Life”, “My Hero,” “Times Like These,” “Learn To Fly,” and then Dave introduced Ann and Nancy Wilson (who are in the segment on Seattle) and did Heart’s “Kick It Out,” (that was from the actual Letterman show,) “Best Of You” and ended with “Everlong.” Damn it was great! So later today, I head back over to the theater to interview Taylor Hawkins and Nate. I can’t wait. Hopefully I will bump into Dave to at least pay respects. He’s been so busy and trying to save his voice for the rest of the week at Letterman and the big LIVE show they’re doing Friday night at the infamous Cubby Bear, where punk got it’s start in Chicago. Dave actually traveled there as a kid with his family and his cousin was a punkster as a young teen and turned Dave on to some of the bands who played there. Obviously, he was hooked, lined and sinkered! LOL. And in other Dave news, Tuesday night, Dave Grohl, Foo Fighters drummer Taylor Hawkins, Perry Farrell and others turned up at Manhattan’s McKittrick Hotel to help celebrate the release of photographer Danny Clinch’s new book, Danny Clinch: Still Moving. Grohl, Hawkins, Farrell and others hit the stage to cover the Rolling Stones’ “Miss You” and Bob Dylan’s “From A Buick 6.” Watch it here….Crobot will team up with Chevelle for a late fall run of tour dates, beginning on Dec 6th in Columbia, SC and winding down on Dec 20th in Milwaukee.
