Pulse of Radio shared a report by the Sydney Morning Herald has stated AC/DC guitarist Malcolm Young has dementia and is being treated in a nursing home in Sydney, Australia. The facility is believed to be Lulworth House in Elizabeth Bay. A Young family connection told the newspaper, “If you were in the room with (Malcolm) and walked out, then came back in one minute later, he wouldn’t remember who you are. He has a complete loss of short-term memory. His wife, Linda, has put him in full-time care.” The 61-year-old guitarist is believed to have suffered a stroke sometime last year and was moved back to Australia from Europe, where he had been living. Former AC/DC manager Michael Browning said, “I think (Malcolm’s illness) came on very suddenly . . . It’s shocking. It’s terrible. Sadly for AC/DC, they’re losing their creator, their mentor. He’s the genius behind the band.” Malcolm did not participate in the recording sessions for AC/DC’s new studio album, Rock Or Bust, which is set to arrive on Dec 2nd. His replacement on the album and the band’s upcoming world tour will be Steve Young, nephew of Malcolm and AC/DC guitarist Angus Young. The band officially announced last week that Malcolm would not be returning to the lineup. Titled Life After Death From Above 1979, the film focuses on the band’s eight-year hiatus and includes interviews with drummer/singer Sebastien Grainger and bassist Jesse F. Keeler, along with members of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, the Strokes, Metric, Justice and other acts. In the film’s trailer, the duo explain, “We broke up because we stopped being friends essentially. We were on tour forever, and hated doing it and hated each other. We were constantly always killing ourselves.” Death From Above 1979 broke up in 2006, but reformed in 2011 and began playing live again. Drummer and singer Sebastien Grainger told us those shows inspired the pair to make new music again: “For me, I really didn’t start thinking about doing anything new until we were playing our own shows. Like, you know, we did a few festival gigs and the response was great, but we really got a sense of who our audience was when we headlined. That was really when we got the reality check that this band is still exciting to people. That was what started motivating me to want to make it a living band.”…call him Profesor! Black Sabbath guitarist Tony Iommi has posted photos online from his first day on the job as a teacher at Coventry University in the U.K. Iommi began his stint as a professor of music last Wednesday (Sep 24th) and posted pictures of a class session as well as an autograph line where he signed things for students. Iommi was appointed Visiting Professor Of Music last June at the university, which awarded him with an Honorary Doctorate Of Arts in November of last year for his outstanding contribution to global music. He toured the facilities in May and spent some time during that visit talking with students and staff about his 50 years as a musician. Department of Performing Arts head Dr. Sara Reed said, “It is a tremendous honor to have Tony here with us as a Visiting Professor. His huge wealth of experience and musical knowledge is beyond value to our students.” Iommi will work this fall directly with students on their songwriting and composition skills.
