Is it Monday already? Damn.
Well, this happened, as expected, I guess! Green Day landed the third Number One album of its career on Sunday night (Oct 16th) as the band’s 12th studio effort, Revolution Radio, debuted at the top of the Billboard 200 album chart with first-week sales of 95,000 units. Some 90,000 of those were traditional physical album sales, while the remaining 5,000 were either via downloads or streams. (And THIS also happened at the band’s in-store signing in LA! So cool!)
Yep, they’re Number One! Who wants cake?
Green Day’s last Number One debut was 2009’s 21st Century Breakdown, while its first one, American Idiot, landed at the top of the chart in 2004 and spent two more weeks there later that year and in 2005. The predecessors to Revolution Radio, 2012’s Uno!, Dos! and Tre! trilogy, debuted at Numbers Two, Nine and 13 respectively.
Green Day has notched a total of 10 albums in the Top 10, starting with its breakthrough 1994 album Dookie. The first single from Revolution Radio, called “Bang Bang,” also recently became the trio’s 21st Top 10 hit on Modern Rock radio. Only three acts have more: Red Hot Chili Peppers with 25, U2 with 23 and Foo Fighters with 22.
Also making a Top 10 debut on the Billboard 200 this week was Alter Bridge, whose The Last Hero sold 28,000 copies to enter at Number Eight. The group was last in the Top 10 back in 2004, when its first effort One Day Remains entered at Number Five. Right on, boys!
Avenged Sevenfold performed their new single, “The Stage,” for the first time on Saturday night in Mexico City at Knotfest. More info about the band will be revealed on Oct 27th! Mark your calendars.
Last week I told you about the upcoming release of Disturbed‘s Live From Red Rocks which will be out Nov 18th. Now comes news our pals Bring Me The Horizon has announced they are finally releasing their long-ready Live At The Royal Albert Hall for Teenage Cancer Trust on DVD on Dec 02. Check out “Happy Song” filmed Apr 22 of this year.
Stone Gossard, Mike McCready, Jeff Ament, Eddie Vedder, Matt Cameron. Do you think Eddie is psyched about the Cubs?
My vote is YES! The Pulse Of Radio reporting Cleveland.com says Pearl Jam is heavily favored to be nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s Class of 2017. This year’s nominees are scheduled to be announced at 8:00 a.m. tomorrow morning (Tuesday, Oct 18th). This year’s newly eligible acts include PJ Harvey, Alanis Morissette and Tupac Shakur, while previous nominees who may be considered again include Nine Inch Nails, the Smiths, the Cars, Sting, Kraftwerk, Yes, Chic, Janet Jackson and the Spinners.
The final list of inductees will be chosen and announced in Dec and the 2017 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction ceremony will take place in Apr.
Pearl Jam guitarist Mike McCready was asked at the 2013 ceremony about his band’s chances: “You know, you never want to place any bets on anything. I’m not a gambler, so I’m not going to try to put any odds on that. But I don’t know. I hope so. But you never know. You never know what happens. It could take a while.“
If inducted, Pearl Jam would be the second of the seminal Seattle “grunge” acts after Nirvana to enter the Hall. Two others, Soundgarden and Alice In Chains, are also both eligible for induction. Those nominated will be voted on by living members of the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame along with a voting group comprised of historians, journalists and critics. Read the full story at Cleveland.com.
Speaking of Soundgarden, Seattle’s Full Tilt Ice Cream has created a new Soundgarden-inspired ice cream flavor called “Black Hole Rum.” It will become available starting on Oct 30th at all Full Tilt locations. Justin Cline and Ann Magyar, co-owners of the Full Tilt franchise, are said to be longtime fans of the Seattle rock scene and previously created the Mudhoney ice cream flavor in 2013. (Blabbermouth)
The Pulse Of Radio also says Evanescence lead singer Amy Lee hinted in an interview with AOL the band is gearing up to make new music, but that it might not take the form of a traditional album release. Lee explained, “We have some new little plan in store, but I don’t wanna give it away yet. But there is some new Evanescence stuff that we’re starting at, but it’s not exactly the most traditional thing. It’s not just, ‘Okay, we’re gonna make a new album right now.’ Not that that’s not coming, but first there’s something else that’s a little bit special and different and (that is) gonna take you down a different path that we wanna try.”
Lee told us a while back that she doesn’t use record sales as a gauge for success these days: “Well you just can’t judge it the same way you used to and by the same model. Having people hear and connect to your song isn’t directly linked to record sales, that’s for sure. I think it may be more accurate to look at how many views on YouTube or something. I’m cool about it. We’ve had a lot of success in the past and that’s awesome. I don’t look at it like this daunting thing that we have to live up to, I look at it like this really positive, awesome thing that wouldn’t have been able to happen if we’d come out for the first time this year.”
Lee also told AOL that Evanescence is “really having a good time as a band right now. Everybody’s just gelling really well together and playing really well together.”
The band will release a career-spanning vinyl box set this fall containing all three official studio albums along with the rare, early demo album Origin.
Also included in the six-LP set is a disc collecting the band’s legendary bonus tracks along with the first new Evanescence studio recording in years, “Even In Death (2016),” a song that originally appeared on Origin.
Evanescence will kick off a month-long North American tour on Oct 28th in Dallas, the band’s first proper trek in four years. I’ve got all the dates in Road Rage.
Finally today, test footage has surfaced from a never-released Metallica video game titled Damage Inc. Although the game was in development and originally intended to arrive in 2005, it never made it to store shelves. Ptoponline.com recently got hold of an early demo of the game, which was set in a post-apocalyptic world and was primarily a vehicular car shooter in the vein of the Twisted Metal video game series.
