Happy Days are here again! The cable guy and the tv repair both making stops by my place this morning! Turbo speed….what a joke! And who knew your tv has a “motherboard.” I don’t even know what the IS, but I guess I need a new one….Last night, I was treated by a close friend to join her to see her husband play bass in King Crimson. Now most of you probably have little idea who that is, but they are one of the grandaddys of “progressive or prog rock.” (I had their album In The Court of the Crimson King and played it to DEATH in college! But as I was in the audience (weird for me to not be on the side of the stage or in balcony) in a seat on the floor of the Best Buy Theater in Times Square, some of the riffs coming from Robert Fripp were the most METAL ones ever. Two guitarists, leader & legendary wizard Fripp, THREE DRUMMERS: Gavin Harrison-Porcupine Tree, Bill Rieflin-Ministry, KMFDM, REM and Pat Mastelotto-Mr. Mister, flute/sax player & original King Crimson member Mel Collins, & the amazing bassist Tony Levin, who also plays in 3 of his own side projects, as well as Peter Gabriel. Needless to say, I was thinking about all my drummer friends, Ray Luzier, Jeremy Spencer, Morgan Rose, Danny Carey, Mike Wengren, Brann Dailor, Vinnie Paul, Shannon Larkin and Sully Erna, who would’ve gone out of their minds if they had seen this show! It was something else! Truly spiritually lifting. And I LOVED LOVED LOVED that Fripp rolled interstitial audio, including a 3:00 piece at the top of the show asking the audience to PLEASE do NOT use your cell phones or cameras or recording devices. Of course, there were people who dissed him, this is New York for cryin’ out loud, but for the most part, people respected their wishes. And in between songs, audio of the usual interviewer Q&A Mr. Fripp probably gets all the time, with emphasis on the interviewers “um”‘s, stutters, and awkward questions. It was hilarious. Bright chap, that Fripp…..OK news: Pulse of Radio reports Halestorm singer Lzzy Hale took time out from the recording of the band’s third album to discuss the project with Gearphoria, admitting there was more pressure this time to follow up the success of 2012’s The Strange Case Of . . . . Hale explained, “We’ve definitely evolved. The one thing that has remained the same is that we’re all perpetually 14 years old inside, so we’re all very immature. That hasn’t changed much. But the animal or monster of Halestorm has gotten bigger, and obviously there’s more responsibility and also a little more on the line. But for the most part we’ve continued to do what we’ve always done, which is chase after whatever gets us excited.” She added, “It blows my mind that not only are we making our third record for Atlantic Records, which is a feat in itself because we know so many bands that never make it to this one . . . but also it has been 18 years since my brother and I started Halestorm, so there are moments of ‘Can you believe we’re still doing this?’ It’s mind-boggling.” The Strange Case Of . . . yielded two chart-topping rock singles in “Freak Like Me” and the Grammy-winning “Love Bites (So Do I)”. Halestorm debuted two new songs — “Heartbreaker” and “Mayhem” — at shows in Tennessee and England this past spring. The new album will be the first one Halestorm has written mostly in the studio. Ms. Hale told Lou Brutus while she enjoys writing songs on tour, they’re often different from what the band does in the studio: “Definitely. When everything is kind of more consistently tour-focused and not, you know, writing-focused, I definitely write differently. I explore different subjects without being picky about anything. So as things develop in my life, in either my personal life or professional, it’s nice to explore all those different subjects, you know, without the pressure of being in the studio.” The band has also been taking time out from the studio to play shows here and there, which Hale has enjoyed, saying, “It’s extremely inspiring to step out of the studio and then step in front of an audience and remind yourself why you’re making these songs. It gives you perspective about what you’re working on in the studio.” Halestorm will play shows in Baltimore & NYC at the end of this month before embarking on a longer U.S. tour that begins on Nov 11th in Chattanooga, TN…..Seether frontman Shaun Morgan told Alternative Nation he would jump at the chance to jam with the surviving members of Nirvana if he could. Morgan explained, “It would be something that I would love to do, but it’s not something that anyone has ever asked me to do. Obviously, just from being a kid, even just to play a show with those guys would be great. But it’s not something that I’ve ever been approached about doing, but obviously as a childhood dream, it would be great to be on stage with those guys.” Morgan added, “All the songs on ‘Nevermind’ would be my favorites because they’re the ones that made me pick up a guitar.” Meanwhile, the new Seether single is called “Same Damn Life.”….Celebrating birthdays: Fri: Jimmy Fallon is Fabulous at 40!
