Good morning. Whew. I wonder how hot it will be in the subway today?
I may have to bring a thermometer, just so I’ll know. Granted, it will be like

Korn’s “Rotting In Vain” video is awesome!
The Pulse of Radio reporting this morning our friends Korn have released the music video for their new single, “Rotting In Vain.” The tune is the first track we’re hearing from their forthcoming 12th album, The Serenity of Suffering. It was produced by Nick Raskulinecz, who has most recently worked with The Deftones, Alice In Chains, Mastodon, Rush and Foo Fighters. I am so psyched! They are much heavier again and Jonathan’s angst is back in full effect! Slipknot’s Corey Taylor is featured on a track called “A Different World.”
Head told me one of the reasons they went with Nick (a name I’ve mentioned to them in the past when looking at producers!) was because he gets the way Fieldy’s bass should sound. And Nick, being a fan boy himself, helped to relate to them what made them great to begin with. I think it’s going to be killer album! Look for it Oct 21st. Here’s the track listing:
The Serenity Of Suffering track listing:
1. “Insane”
2. “Rotting In Vain”
3. “Black Is The Soul”
4. “The Hating”
5. “A Different World” (feat. Corey Taylor)
6. “Take Me”
7. “Everything Falls Apart”
8. “Die Yet Another Night”
9. “When You’re Not There”
10. “Next In Line”
11. “Please Come For Me”
He’s baaaccckkk!
Last week we reported on Jason Newsted, who has resurfaced after taking a break away from everything. The Pulse Of Radio says the former Metallica bassist has no problem playing the age card when discussing in his decision to launch a mostly acoustic project, Would and Steal.
In a live Facebook chat with Mighty Fine Guitars on Friday, Newsted spoke about the surprising turn his musical journey has taken, three decades after replacing Cliff Burton in Metallica. (Yeah, we’re all getting to learn how to hold the iPad/phone for these Facebook Live chats….takes a minute! LOL)
He said: “After thirty years of playing heavy music and travelling around the world — I’ve been around the globe about five and a half times, fifty-five countries — I’ve already climbed that mountain; there is no more of that mountain to be climbed. So within the accolades that I shared of the group’s success — I was one member of that group, something bigger than all of us; and we got Grammy Awards and [Rock And Roll] Hall Of Fame and all those different things — that’s as far as you can go in that kind of music, and it’s someone else’s turn to have fun in that music now.”
Newsted says he isn’t even going to try to compete with some of the newer guys: “I can’t play like Slipknot now; those guys are heavier and faster than I could ever dream of playing now. So this is how I can play, and this is what I’ll do for the rest of time.”
But even though this section of his journey is a bit more mellow, he says he still plays metal “all the time.” Newsted and undisclosed friends will play two acoustic benefit concerts for Little Kids Rock on Aug 5th and 6th at Might Fine Guitars in Lafayette, CA.
Linkin Park: Mike Shinoda, Brad Delson, Rob Bourdin, Joe Hahn, Dave Farrell, Chester Bennington
Pulse also clarifies a recent comment made by Chester Bennington of Linkin Park. A quote from the singer emerged Jul 21st, in which he claimed his band helped keep metal alive, it was disseminated widely by media outlets. But Linkin Park’s Mike Shinoda claims the quote is being completely taken out of context, and used as “clickbait” to generate page views.
The quote came from a conversation Bennington had with a reporter for Metal Hammer. Bennington was responding to a question about how the band is often dismissed as a boy band with guitars. He commented: “In my opinion, we actually kept metal alive,” and went on to discuss how many newer bands credit Linkin Park with getting them into the metal scene.
When Shinoda saw the blowback his comments were getting on social media from fans, he weighed in, taking to Twitter. In one tweet he said: “Bunch of rock outlets taking Chester’s ‘kept metal alive’ quote out of context today. So dumb. Its click bait, don’t fall for it.” And “He basically said that pop music was ruling the world, and we made a case for (commercially) viable heavy music. NBD“
Linkin Park is currently working on a follow-up album to The Hunting Party for a 2017 release. Rumor has it we could see a single for radio this fall!
And you may not have been born yet, or even into music yet, but I recall when this album was released! Pulse reminded me it was 36 years ago today (Jul 25th, 1980), AC/DC released their biggest selling album ever, Back In Black. It was their first album without lead singer Bon Scott, who had died a few months earlier after passing out and choking on his own vomit following a long night of drinking.
The group quickly decided to press on and hired Brian Johnson from the band Geordie to take over on vocals, and they headed to the Bahamas for about six weeks to do the album. AC/DC had made some serious headway in America before Scott’s death, but no one knew how Back In Black would be received. The album took off, and eventually sold over 21 million copies in the U.S.
Johnson admitted he didn’t have a clue how successful Back In Black would turn out to be: “I’d just melted me brain in there, and I didn’t know if it was good or bad. That was the first time I’d been in the Bahamas, anyway, or near America, y’know, and you (have to) remember, I was just fascinated by the whole culture and all, and I had no idea what the hell I was doing! And (laughs) lucky, really — I was a bit lucky, I think.”
The album included the singles “You Shook Me All Night Long,” which peaked at Number 35 on the Billboard Hot 100, and “Back In Black,” which topped out at Number 37. Despite its massive success, Back In Black never got higher than Number Four on the album charts. The band’s next album, For Those About To Rock, reached Number One.
As of December 2015, Back In Black, which has sold 22 million copies to date, is at Number Six on the list of the biggest selling albums in the U.S.
Sick Puppies, bless their hearts, are working on a day off today. They’re stopping by the hardDriveRadio studios to do a video interview and an acoustic performance. More tomorrow!
And finally today, two Netflix related items actually:
1. Check out Stranger Things. It is crazy good. Winona Ryder is great in it!
2. Netflix will be the home to the upcoming revival of Mystery Science Theater 3000. The show will star Jonah Ray, Patton Oswalt and Felicia Day. Original cast members Mary Jo Pehl, Kevin Murphy and Bill Corbett will make appearances on the show and write for it.
